ESPN debuts recruiting rankings

ESPN released its player rankings Thursday for the top 300 recruits of the 2016 cycle. Two of Florida’s eight verbal commitments made the list. Defensive back Chauncey Gardner, a Rivals100 member, is ranked 277th nationally by ESPN and linebacker Vosean Joseph comes in at No. 284. Two more UF pledges, wide receivers Isaiah Johnson and Rick Wells, are also rated four-star prospects. Conversely, Rivals, Scout and 247Sports each have just one future Gator (Gardner) with a four-star rating. However, Florida… Read More »

Florida coaches on the road

With spring football wrapped up, Florida is now tackling one the busiest times of the recruiting cycle. Last Wednesday marked the start of the evaluation period, a 60-day time frame in which assistant coaches can visit recruits twice at their high schools to evaluate them athletically and academically. The UF staff didn’t hit the road much last week, primarily because spring football doesn’t start in most states (including Florida) until later this month or May. But the coaches have made… Read More »

Ivie earns state medals in weightlifting, wrestling

One of the strongest players for Florida’s football team next season is not on campus at the moment. Andrew Ivie, a UF defensive tackle signee who reports to school this summer, won a state medal Saturday at the FHSAA weightlifting finals in Kissimmee. He placed second with a 735-pound total, benching 405 pounds and setting a school record with a 330-pound clean and jerk (video below). Gators in third place for Diggs

Florida is in the running for another elite wide receiver from Maryland. Can you Diggs it? Wide receiver Trevon Diggs, the younger brother of former five-star recruit Stefon Diggs, announced his top schools in order Friday. Alabama and LSU lead the pack followed by the Gators at No. 3. Diggs, a Rivals250 member ranked in the top 100 nationally by 247Sports and Scout, visited UF last month with QB Dwayne Haskins, another standout prospect out of Maryland. Tennessee, Penn State, Miami, Clemson,… Read More »

Gardner solid, but will take visits

Chauncey Gardner, Florida’s top verbal commitment, liked what he saw from the Gators in last weekend’s spring game. The Rivals100 cornerback from Cocoa even thinks UF will have a turnaround season in 2015. “It’s only the spring,” he said, “but it’s awesome to see the atmosphere and the team is way better than last year. They are going to do some damage this year.” Gardner watched Florida’s corners closely during the Orange & Blue Debut. “They did their thing,” he… Read More »

Bruce sees fit in Florida’s offense

Florida unveiled a new passing offense in Saturday’s spring game, and it caught the eye of one of the nation’s top wide receivers. Consensus four-star recruit Sam Bruce attended the Orange & Blue Debut with his former high school teammate and UF running back signee, Jordan Scarlett. “It was a good game,” said Bruce, who is ranked a top-50 overall recruit by Rivals and ESPN. “They definitely spread the ball around a lot more than I thought.” Quarterbacks Will Grier… Read More »

Imatorbhebhe comfortable in Gainesville

Wide receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe made yet another visit to Gainesville this weekend for the Orange & Blue Debut. The four-star prospect from Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett has grown comfortable at Florida over the past few months. “The level of comfortability I have with this place is huge,” he said. “I’m not a stranger here. This is my fifth or sixth time on this campus with this new staff, so I know a lot about them. That’s the best thing about… Read More »

Visitors for OB Debut

Florida has hosted several recruits over the course of spring football, and Saturday will be no different. More than a dozen 2016 prospects are scheduled to attend the Orange & Blue Debut in The Swamp. The biggest names are at wide receiver, as Miami commit Sam Bruce, Josh Hammond and Josh Imatorbhebhe will visit. They’re top targets at the position and have UF ties. Hammond is the younger brother of former Florida WR Frankie Hammond, Imatorbhebhe is the younger brother… Read More »

NFL opportunity still present at Florida

Recruits consider several factors when deciding on a college, and an NFL opportunity usually ranks high in the pecking order. By the looks of Florida’s pro day Wednesday, UF didn’t feel like a school that had gone 11-13 the past two seasons and fired its head coach. All 32 teams were in attendance to watch 22 former Gators work out. “This is what you hope each year,” Florida coach Jim McElwain said. “You hope you have the depth and the… Read More »

Spring practice helping McElwain, UF in recruiting

With the exception of Monday, Florida coach Jim McElwain has enjoyed seeing his football team compete this spring. Of course, he’s not the only one. Recruits have flocked to UF this month for practices, and the Gators have almost tripled their number of verbal commitments. Prior to spring football, McElwain and his coaches were mostly selling a vision for the future rather than a product on the field. But over the last few weeks, visiting prospects have been able to… Read More »
