Touted LB set for official visit to UF this weekend

by

LAKE BUENA VISITA, Fla. — Unlike a lot of high school prospects, Stephone Anthony isn’t rushing his recruiting experience.

Anthony, a top linebacker prospect from Wadesboro, N.C. Anson, wants to take his time and check out all the schools he’s interested in before he makes his one and only decision on Feb. 2.

Anthony is down to Florida, Clemson, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State and said all are even at this point.

While Anthony’s maturity is refreshing, he wasn’t always been this level-headed.

During the early part of his recruitment, Anthony says he was sold on Florida. It seemed like only a matter of time before he committed to the Gators. The more he talked about it, the more his parents grew weary. Shortly after his senior season began, Anthony’s parents sat him down and advised him to slow everything down and sit back and study everything before he rushed into a decision.

With that wise advice, Anthony stopped calling Florida his leader and started fresh.

“I got to talking to my parents and I wanted to do it the right way,” he said. “I started backing off, and I didn’t want to be leaning anywhere.”

Fortunately for Florida, Anthony is still very interested and will leave Wednesday’s Under Armour All-America Game and head to Gainesville for an official visit, where he hopes to spend some quality time with Florida’s new coach.

“I don’t know much about Will Muschamp,” Anthony said. “When I get there Thursday I’ll see how things go and see if it works out for me.”

Anthony unofficially visited Florida for the LSU game last October. Anthony will officially visit Clemson, VaTech and N.C. State after he checks out Florida again.

Tech has always appealed to Anthony because of the style of defense run by Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster. He’s also been impressed by how many quality defenders have come out of Blacksburg, Va.

“Virginia Tech’s defensive — Bud Foster and Frank Beamer — they always find a way to win and a way to play great defense,” Anthony said.

The team exciting Anthony the most right now seems to be Clemson. Less than two hundred miles away, Clemson is starting to feel like another home to Anthony.

“I’ve been there a couple times and I enjoyed it,” he said. “It’s got something to do with the people there. The people there are cool and they’re the family-type. It’s a really good time there.”

Anthony said the limited distractions in Clemson are another reason he’s strongly considering the Tigers.

Anthony will do his fair share of traveling this month and after a long, private pow-wow with his family, he’ll find where he belongs.

“I’ll take my visits and we’ll see what happens on signing day,” he said.

If it’s between UF and Va Tech, he’s a winner either way, at least according to my sin, the UF grad student and Tech alum.

    @ GatorSteve,

We are in big need of great LB’s. Brandon Hicks and AJ Jones are gone. Jelani Jenkins is a good LB but we need bigger mobile LB’s. That’s when we dominated….when we had moblie big LB’s like Brandon Spikes and Brandon Siler. So we badly need Stephone Anthony and Curtis Grant. LB’s and Linemen are our biggest needs

GatorSteve is an obvious Clemson plant on this site — pay no attention to his comments. We need playmakers on Defense, and Anthony is one we need.

Driskel looks amazing in the Under Armour game! If Brantley’s watching, he’s gotta know that it’s all over for him.
SHOUT OUT to our lil’ buddy JACK: nice interception and awesome return for TD by that Semi-not commit.

    Hey Ed,

Love your blog. Just finished watching the Under Armour game on my DVR and noticed a couple things I wanted your input on. I noticed after Driskel scored his TD that one of his O-lineman #65 Red team (Cyrus Kouandjio) ran off the field alongside of Driskel doing our Gator Chomp. And also after commercial break Driskel was speaking into the camera sitting next to A.C Leonard and #2 Red Team (Erique Florence) and said “this is the trio of Gainesville for years to come.” I haven’t really heard much about Kuoandjio or Florence, but I wondered if you also saw this on TV and if you had any insight on their level of interest in the Gators. Thanks Ed!

correction: There are 2 guys on the red team wearing #2 uniform. It was Ja’Juan Story, and we have all heard about Story. Glad he is still a Gator

Edward, how do you rate our chances on Chikillo, the kid has a non stop motor and seems to be Muschamps kind of player. Keep up the good work.
