Notre Dame linebacker commit Alex Anzalone (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) made a surprise visit to UF, one of his finalists, for Friday Night Lights.
The ESPN150 member came down to the Sunshine State for Gridiron Kings in Lake Buena Vista this weekend and hitched a ride with Tampa Hillsborough defensive end Jordan Sherit to participate in Florida’s showcase.
Anzalone said Saturday the trip to Gainesville had nothing to do with recruiting and he wasn’t pursued by any coaches or commits.
He just wanted to compete and enjoy himself.
“I had a lot of fun,” said Anzalone, who is solid with the Irish. “I got to hang out with the Florida boys and see what they’re all about, got some quick tips from the coaches there and just had a good time.”
Anzalone also lived out a childhood dream.
“I grew up a Florida fan,” he said. “Even last night it was a cool experience for me to play in The Swamp. I always wanted to do that when I was a kid. It was hard to pass it up.”
The intensity of the workout was Anzalone’s highlight of the night.
“I think the position drills and the agility drills they had in the beginning (were the best),” Anzalone said. “They were pretty intense. They give you a good workout.”
Florida’s coaching staff was one of the main reasons Anzalone considered the Gators and he had high praise for UF coach Will Muschamp, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and linebackers coach D.J. Durkin.
“They’re good guys,” Anzalone said. “I know coach Quinn has NFL experience, coach Muschamp has NFL experience, coach Durkin has coached schools all across the country. So they all have experience that they can teach me to refine my technique.”
