Gators offer in-state DE

Add another target to Florida’s board at the Buck position.

Clearwater Central Catholic defensive end Justus Reed camped at UF on Thursday and earned an offered from the coaches afterward.

For someone who grew up rooting for the Gat0rs, it was a special moment for him.

“It’s been my school since I was in like sixth grade,” he said. “I was real excited, really happy and it’s definitely one of my top schools.

“They appreciated that I came down and worked out because a lot of kids, they don’t want to come and compete. They just want to get an offer. Being that I came, and I worked hard, they offered me a scholarship.”

Prior to receiving the good news in the football offices, Reed enjoyed his interactions with UF coach Will Muschamp and defensive line coach Brad Lawing during camp.

“I got a lot of attention from the coaches, and they coached me up pretty good,” he said. “I talked to Coach Muschamp and all the coaches, and it was a good experience. I really liked it. Coach Lawing knows what he’s talking about. He’s a really good dude. I really liked him.”

The 6-foot-3, 216-pounder hopes to return to Gainesville for Friday Night Lights and a game in 2013.

“I definitely want to come back,” he said. “The program speaks for itself. I’m pretty happy with what I saw and what I see all the time when I come up here. I like it a lot.”

With the fan factor and his familiarity with the Gators, is Florida in front?

“I’m leaning towards it kind of,” responded Reed, who named Florida State, Ohio State, North Carolina, Duke and Kentucky as other schools of interest.

He’ll be visiting some of them in the coming weeks as well as Miami and Virginia.

“There’s not really a day or a time that I’m going to make my decision,” he said, “but whenever the time is right, basically.”

More of what we need. Kids that aren’t afraid to compete and want to be a Gator. Hope he decides to come on board and prove the “experts” wrong about those 3 stars!

Not sure we need a lot of 216lb ends though. Lets hope he puts 50-80 lbs on. That is a long way to go.

Hey, at 6’3 216 lbs he can always switch to WR if DE doesn’t work out

Coach LT, aren’t we a little hopeful that his hands are that good. Still like his size. Has a full year to get his body up to standard to compete.

This is why we are not going to be able to compete with alabama, they sign 4 and 5 star recruits, and we sign sleepers.

He doesn’t need to be 280 lbs to play the Buck position. He has the size, at this stage of his career and I’m quiet certain that the Coaches are very capable at discerning talent, when they see it.

Gary Poe – so, you don’t think we’re capable of beating Bamer with players like Morrison? We have and will continue to get our share of 4 and 5 star recruits. We will continue to find diamonds in the rough, as well. Muschamp and company have proven that they have an eye for under-valued players. I would take a Chris Doering over a Debose any day.

Too many get caught up with the number of stars. The coaches know what they are looking for…potential, instincts and competitiveness far outweigh the number of stars besides their names. GIGator, great examples.

GIGator & MJMGator- You can make a case for both sides. And to answer GIGator’s question, I don’t think that we can beat Alabama. Last time I checked we have lost the past 3 out of 4 times against them. I saw that you used DeBose as an example. The problem with DeBose was not his stars but his attitude and maturity, just because they are a 3 star doesn’t mean that their attitude and maturity will be stellar when they get on campus. Morrison was a great pickup, but also mind you that Morrision’s final schools came down to florida and alabama. The last thing I will say is to check the past years recruiting classes (2006-2010). If you do you will find that most of our contributors came from 4 & 5 star recruits eg (tebow, harvin, jenkins, bostic, gillislee, demps, mccray, sturgis) compared to (bryan jones, brandon hicks. ect.)

Good point Gary, I would have taken Lorenzo Carter, Hand, Harris, or at least 5 other ends over him, but then again I’m not a coach of the Gators so my opinion doesn’t matter lol. Hopefully this kid turns out to be something special and proves us wrong…
