Commit of the week: CB Quincy Wilson

by

Fort Lauderdale cornerback Quincy Wilson and his University School football team, the defending state champions in Class 3A, faced Homestead on Sunday in one of the premier preseason games of the weekend.

Televised by ESPNU, the 6-foot-1, 197-pound Wilson helped lead the Suns to a 41-21 win with his exceptional coverage. Many recruiting analysts feel Wilson is better suited to play safety, but he did a superb job guarding fellow Florida commit and the nation’s No. 2 receiver, Ermon Lane.

He held Lane to just four catches for 42 yards, one of which was a 21-yard reception when Wilson wasn’t on him. His highlight of the game was an interception he returned 28 yards for a touchdown to give University School a 34-14 lead in the fourth quarter.

Wilson celebrated in the end zone with a series of Gator Chomps.

“It felt great,” he said of the pick-six. “I read the quarterback and made a big play, and my team needed it.”

Here are some other UF pledges who performed well last week:

QB Will Grier, Davidson (N.C.) Day: In a 61-6 blowout victory against Albemarle, Grier threw for 309 yards and seven touchdowns on 16-of-25 passing and rushed for 67 yards and another score on six carries.

RB Dalvin Cook, Miami Central: The Under Armour All-American accounted for two touchdowns, including a 53-yard punt return, as the defending Class 6A state champs topped Dwyer, 44-13.

TE C’yontai Lewis, Alabaster (Ala.) Kingwood Christian: Lewis had 131 receiving yards and a 19-yard touchdown catch to help his team edge Jackson Academy, 43-34.

DE Justus Reed, Clearwater Central Catholic: In just one half of football, Reed registered five sacks and two tackles for a loss in a 22-13 preseason victory over Clearwater Countryside.
