If there’s one knock on Florida starting running back Kelvin Taylor, it’s that he’s not a home-run threat.
He has impressive cutting ability and can make people miss in the open field, but doesn’t have track speed and a fast time in the 40-yard dash.
That’s where Dalvin Cook comes in.
In Miami Central’s 55-37 win over Boynton Beach in the opening round of the playoffs, Cook had just five carries in the game.
That’s all he needed.
The Under Armour All-American rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned a punt 85 yards for a score.
Cook has now carried the ball 111 times for 1,322 yards (11.9 average per rush) and 25 touchdowns as a senior. With him being an early enrollee, he has a chance to showcase his skills in the spring and earn playing time as a freshman.
QB Will Grier, Davidson (N.C). Day: Grier threw for a season-high 498 yards and eight touchdowns on 23-of-30 passing in his team’s 73-24 rout of Charlotte (N.C.) Hickory Grove Christian. He also rushed for 59 yards and a score on five carries. Grier will go for his third straight state championship Friday.
ATH J.C. Jackson, Immokalee: Jackson scored on a 30-yard reception to help his Indians edge Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, 25-23.
TE DeAndre Goolsby, Derby (Kan.): Goolsby snagged a seven-yard touchdown as Derby defeated Manhattan (Kan.) 55-20 to advance to the third round of the playoffs.
DE Justus Reed, Clearwater Central Catholic: Reed recorded six tackles and a sack in his team’s 47-0 shutout of Fort Myers Bishop Verot in the first round. He has 80 total tackles and 10 sacks on the year.
