Rivals100 cornerback Marcus Lewis (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) is visiting the Sunshine State this week to check out Florida, Florida State and Miami, three schools he says are in his Top 5.

The last stop of his trip is UF, where he’ll spend the weekend.

After touring the campus Friday, Lewis took in Florida’s second practice of the spring.

“It was very fast,” he said. “It was up-tempo. They play hard and physical. So I liked that.”

Last week Lewis named the Gators No. 2 on his leaderboard behind Ohio State. Having never visited Gainesville prior to this weekend, what put them near the top of his list?

“A lot of people told me there’s nothing like running out The Swamp,” he explained. “I know Joe Haden. He’s from my area and played here as well, so I just like the tradition and what they’re about.”

Another UF player Lewis knows from the D.C. area is freshman cornerback Jalen Tabor. The two have been friends for a couple years, and Tabor’s early enrollment is helping Florida’s chances with Lewis.

“Jalen’s the man. I love him,” Lewis said. “We train back home together, and he wants me here with him. He told me when practice started, ‘If you get in here with me, I’ll take you under my wing. You’re from the city, I’m from the city. So it could be great.’ ”

Sitting down one-on-one with Florida coach Will Muschamp was the biggest thing Lewis said he wanted to get out of this visit, and they met with each other for more than an hour Friday.

“It was great,” Lewis said. “Coach Muschamp told me they’re low at defensive back, and they need corners. He wants me to come in here and make an impact. He said I’m versatile, and I can play outside corner or inside corner. It sounds good.”

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder no longer claims a leader and said all schools are “pretty even.” He plans to make his decision some time this fall.

“Whenever it feels right,” Lewis said.
