Zach’s Mail Stack 12/19

by

The dead period is now underway for Florida coach Jim McElwain, but he still had a lively week. McElwain made his first official hire, landed his first recruit, got good news on Jake McGee and not-so-good about Treon Harris. McElwain should keep busy moving forward as he continues putting together his staff and recruiting class. We should a see a new addition to each group every week over the next 20-plus days. On to the questions! The offensive line is getting very thin. Are … Read More »

Decision looming for Irvin

by

Perhaps no recruit has felt the impact of Florida’s coaching change more than Tim Irvin. The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder from Miami Westminster Christian was officially visiting UF the weekend Will Muschamp got fired. “That was hard to see,” Irvin said of the trip. “I still had a great visit. The (South Carolina) game was crazy.” Now Irvin, who is being recruited by the Gators as a defensive back, is trying to build a relationship with the new coaches in Gainesville. Jim McElwain visited him last Wednesday … Read More »

Ivey won’t be influenced by teammate, coaches

by

Martez Ivey and his Apopka team won the Class 8A state championship Saturday with a 30-23 win over Miami Columbus. The five-star offensive tackle was overwhelmed with emotion after the game, a feeling he wanted to embrace before his recruitment heats up. “I’m excited, you know?” Ivey said. “This moment right here, I’m not going to let college take this away right now. I’m hoping to make a decision soon. I’m going to think about it over Christmas break and just pray … Read More »

Cowart turns focus to recruiting

by

ORLANDO — Byron Cowart’s high school career ended Saturday with another loss in the state title game. His Armwood Hawks were defeated 24-10 by Miami Central, the same team that beat them in the Class 6A final last year. With his senior season now over, the consensus five-star defensive end will turn his focus to recruiting. Cowart will take his final three official visits to Auburn, Florida and Florida State in January. He’s already visited Alabama and Maryland. New UF coach Jim McElwain talked … Read More »

Zach’s Mail Stack 12/13

by

After a busy few days last week and the Muschamp story last night, the Mail Stack returns. Sorry I’ve keep you all anxiously waiting, but when news breaks about coaching hires, that takes precedence. It’s been an eventful 10 days with Jim McElwain taking over at Florida, and that’s great for UF recruiting after three weeks of being in a holding pattern. On to the questions! Given the amount of time that offensive line coach Mike Summers and recruiting ace T-Rob have spent with … Read More »

by

Tight end Daniel Imatorbhehe turned 18 on Tuesday and received a birthday visit from new Florida coach Jim McElwain. The 6-foot-4, 227-pounder from Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett hosted McElwain at his house along with UF secondary coach Travaris Robinson. “It went good,” Imatorbhehe said. “He came over with coach T-Rob and let me know more about himself. I know all about the University of Florida, so he wanted me to learn about him, his offensive scheme and what he plans to do … Read More »

Important week ahead for McElwain

by

In his introductory press conference Saturday, new UF coach Jim McElwain said he’s wanted to be a Gator since the first time he recruited the Sunshine State. That was in 2000 with Louisville, his first coaching job in Division I football. “I recruited Florida when I was at the University of Louisville, when I was at Michigan State, recruited Florida obviously for the University of Alabama,” McElwain said. “I saw the influence (UF had on recruits), and I saw what it’s all about. This … Read More »

UF assistants deserve credit for recruiting efforts

by

Florida now has a new head football coach, and on signing day in two months, he’ll receive a ton of praise for the recruits UF brings in. And deservedly so. With just seven verbal commitments at this time, it’s going to take some serious work by Jim McElwain to salvage what’s been a disappointing 2015 class for the Gators thus far. Fortunately for him, the recruiting efforts of Florida’s 10 assistants over the last three weeks will make his job easier. Since Will Muschamp … Read More »

Recruits react to McElwain hire

by

The uncertainty of who Florida’s football coach would be next season is one of the main reasons UF has struggled in the 2015 recruiting cycle. Prospects got their answer Thursday. The Gators hired Colorado State’s Jim McElwain, who has an impressive track record as a coach but isn’t a well-known name in recruiting — at least with the kids being targeted by the Gators in this class. McElwain hasn’t recruited high-profile prospects in the state of Florida since 2011, his last year as … Read More »

Jefferson hosts three UF coaches on in-home visit

by

Five-star defensive end CeCe Jefferson hosted three Florida assistants for an in-home visit Monday night. UF interim coach D.J. Durkin, defensive line coach Brad Lawing and secondary coach Travaris Robinson made the U.S. Army All-American a priority on their first day of recruiting in the contact period. “It was great,” Jefferson said of the visit. “It made me feel kind of special. With everything going on, they still found time in their day to come see me and my family. It was … Read More »
