Florida selling Scarlett on opportunity

by

With the departures of Mack Brown and junior Matt Jones, the Gators are in need of a running back for their 2015 class. Jim McElwain made the position a priority as soon as he became Florida’s coach, and one prospect he zeroed in on was Miami commit Jordan Scarlett. The previous staff tried recruit the U.S. Army All-American but to no avail. However, McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier’s history with running backs, specifically at Alabama, sparked Scarlett’s interest. “It’s attractive,” he said. … Read More »

Productive recruiting weekend for Gators

by

Florida has finally gained some recruiting momentum after wrapping up what may turn out to be the weekend this month that features the most future Gators on official visits. UF picked up a commitment from linebacker Rayshad Jackson and ended up hosting 11 recruits, with as many as eight who will likely sign with Florida. The biggest names on campus were defensive end Bryon Cowart and offensive tackle Martez Ivey, a pair of consensus five-star prospects. Cowart left his official visit early but … Read More »

Cowart leaves UF visit early

by

Official visits can last no longer than 48 hours on a college campus for recruits, but five-star defensive end Byron Cowart only spent a fourth of that time at Florida this weekend. Cowart, who is ranked the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect by ESPN and Rivals, didn’t arrive in Gainesville for his official visit until shortly after midnight Saturday due to his basketball game Friday night. But less than 12 hours later, Cowart and his mother left for Tampa at noon. According … Read More »

You can feel it with each day that passes. As signing day nears, many Florida recruiting fans are starting to worry about how this 2015 class will pan out. It’s been over a month since the Gators landed a verbal commitment, and before that it had been more than four months. In addition, the buzz surrounding Will Muschamp and Auburn’s recruiting efforts with some of UF’s top targets only adds insult to injury. Davis meets Nussmeier for first time

by

Florida sent a pair of coaches to St. Petersburg on Wednesday night to meet with four-star wide receiver Ryan Davis. The Rivals100 member received an in-home visit from UF offensive coordiantor Doug Nussmeier and defensive backs coach Kirk Callahan, who recruits the Tampa area for the Gators. “It went well,” Davis said of the visit. “First time meeting coach Nussmeier, so it was real nice. He told me all about his plan.” UF coach Jim McElwain visited Davis last month and told him … Read More »

Notebook: Jefferson decommits from UGA

by

Florida is still looking to add a couple wide receivers to its 2015 class, and one recruit who seemed like a long shot now appears to be a viable option. U.S. Army All-American Van Jefferson decommitted from Georgia on Tuesday, announcing his decision on Twitter. The 6-foot-2, 183-pounder from Brentwood (Tenn.) Ravenwood had been pledged to the school since the summer. A trip to Ole Miss in December halted plans to enroll early at UGA, and his visit to Oklahoma this past … Read More »

Weekend recap

by

Over the weekend, Florida coach Jim McElwain and his assistants hosted their first set of official visitors since the contact period started. Four of the seven recruits were committed to other schools heading into their trips, and UF has caused all of them to rethink their recruitments. Under Armour All-American Christian Pellage, an offensive tackle committed to South Carolina, is now considering a switch to the in-state Gators. “It was good meeting the new staff and seeing all the energy that they have,” … Read More »

Zach’s Mail Stack 1/16

Ah, recruiting is alive and well again! The contact period resumed Thursday and Florida hit the road about as hard as you would expect a school that only had eight verbal commitments in mid-January. You can always tell who coaches really want by the visits they make on the first day of the contact period. Here’s a recap of the recruits they went to see, and I’ll have updates this weekend on the official visitors. On to the questions! Out of the big 3 (Byron … Read More »

Florida staff returns to recruiting trail

by

College coaches around the country returned to the recruiting trail Thursday with the start of the contact period. Florida’s staff didn’t waste any time trying play catch-up with their top priorities. According to ESPN’s Derek Tyson, new UF assistants Kirk Callahan and Terrell Williams met with Byron Cowart’s mother at Denny’s on Thursday at 12:01 a.m. The coaches then greeted the five-star defensive end at his bus stop and followed him to school. Talk about a first impression. Williams also met with five-star … Read More »

Merrick decides on Arkansas

by

A Florida offensive line target who revealed little information about his recruitment down the stretch made his decision Sunday night. In somewhat of a surprise outcome, four-star guard Jalen Merrick announced his pledge to Arkansas on Twitter and will enroll early at the school. His enrollment status was in limbo earlier this week, but the NCAA cleared Merrick academically on Friday. The Razorbacks beat out Florida and Florida State for the in-state prospect from New Smyrna Beach. The Gators were the favorite for Merrick … Read More »
