Get the latest buzz on UF recruiting

South Florida recruiting a staple for McElwain

When former Florida assistant Travaris Robinson left for Auburn, it was a major blow to UF recruiting. Robinson had been widely regarded as the school’s best recruiter and, as a Miami native, kept the Gators relevant in the talent-rich South Florida region. Robinson accompanied Florida coach Jim McElwain on the majority of his initial recruiting visits, and his departure was expected to hurt McElwain’s efforts in the 2015 cycle. No T-Rob? No prob. McElwain and his assistants put together a… Read More »

Gators host, offer several recruits over weekend

Florida had its second round of unofficial visitors for the 2016 recruiting cycle over the weekend. After hosting a handful of prospects Jan. 31, the Gators brought in at least a half dozen recruits this past Friday and Saturday. Jacksonville Raines wide receiver Rick Wells, Florida’s lone verbal commitment for 2016, visited Friday along with with teammate Michael Pinckney, a Miami linebacker pledge, and Orange Park Fleming Island running back Trey Sneed. On Saturday UF hosted a pair of ESPN300… Read More »

VIDEO: Desir-Jones’ inspiring story

Richerd Desir-Jones isn’t one of Florida’s best-known 2015 signees, but all Gator fans should get familiar with his story. His success in football is enough to get your attention. The 6-foot-3, 292-pound tw0-way lineman from Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas won the Class 7A state championship as a senior. He then committed to UF as an offensive guard just days before signing day, flipping from FIU. Although Desir-Jones is rated a consensus three-star lineman, Scout national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons… Read More »

UF hands out two notable offers

Florida’s coaching staff is already at work for the 2016 class. The Gators have extended scholarship offers to several rising seniors since signing day last week, but UF recruiting fans might want to get familiar with two recruits who were offered Thursday. Hallandale wide receiver Josh Hammond and Virginia Beach (Va.) Ocean Lakes cornerback Levonta Taylor are the latest 2016 prospects to get offers from Florida. Hammond is the younger brother of former Gators wide receiver Frankie Hammond, now with the… Read More »

Rivals roundtable

The 2015 recruiting cycle is now in the books, and Florida’s recruiting class finished with a top 25 team ranking. The Gators were ranked 23rd nationally by Rivals.com, which rated a third of UF’s signees as four-star prospects or higher. The Sun joined Rivals analysts Blake Alderman, Mike Farrell and Woody Wommack for a roundtable discussion of the class. We each give an overall grade for Jim McElwain’s inaugural class and weigh in on who was Florida’s most important signee, the… Read More »

Ivey continues five-star trend at Florida

Martez Ivey, Florida’s top overall target, committed to UF over Auburn at his signing day ceremony Wednesday. The consecutive five-star offensive tackle from Apopka visited both schools in January and took a cruise to the Bahamas over the weekend to make his decision. “What I thought about is just where I wanted to be at the next three to four years and what I want to do with my life,” Ivey said on ESPNU. “It’s not all about football …… Read More »

Eventful week for UF recruiting

From the end of Florida’s visit weekend last Sunday to this past Monday, it was an eventful eight days for UF football recruiting. After a month-long dead period that lived up to its name, the final week of the contact period generated a lot of buzz, news and results for the Gators. Coach Jim McElwain and his staff are now riding a wave of momentum into signing day, which has the potential to be big for UF with the number… Read More »

Gators get Callaway’s final visit

Florida is looking to land an offensive weapon from Miami Booker T. Washington for the second consecutive recruiting cycle. Last February the Gators flipped quarterback Treon Harris from Florida State on signing day. Harris played in nine games as a freshman and started the final six games of the season. Antonio Callaway, a four-star wide receiver for Harris’ high school, chose to officially visit Florida over Alabama this weekend. “The trip was really good,” Callaway said. “I enjoyed it. It… Read More »

Zach’s Mail Stack 2/1

Thanks to my 1-year-old, 70-pound boxer, who apparently thinks anything (including laptop screens) is fair game to pounce on, the Mail Stack comes to you late. On the bright side, my new computer is a little bit faster and my mock class is a little more accurate. Florida picked up a pair of offensive linemen this weekend, and they won’t be the only recruits from the official visitors list who will end up with the Gators. Fans have been happy to… Read More »
