Spring practice helping McElwain, UF in recruiting

With the exception of Monday, Florida coach Jim McElwain has enjoyed seeing his football team compete this spring. Of course, he’s not the only one. Recruits have flocked to UF this month for practices, and the Gators have almost tripled their number of verbal commitments. Prior to spring football, McElwain and his coaches were mostly selling a vision for the future rather than a product on the field. But over the last few weeks, visiting prospects have been able to… Read More »

VIDEO: Tisdale talks UF commitment

Florida gained its eighth verbal commitment and fifth in three weeks Friday when Tyrek Tisdale pledged to UF during his visit to Gainesville. Following his trip, the versatile athlete from Orlando Oak Ridge spoke with The Sun about his decision.

Trio of top-100 prospects visit Florida

Two of Florida’s top offensive targets and possibly the No. 1 overall pass rusher on the board visited UF on Friday. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. and wide receiver Trevon Diggs, both Maryland prospects ranked in the top 100 of the 247Sports Composite, checked out practice along with five-star defensive end Shavar Manuel from Bradenton IMG Academy. Haskins is scheduled to return for the spring game and Diggs also plans to be back in Gainesville. He is the younger brother of… Read More »

Florida gaining early momentum for 2016

One week into spring football, Florida is already gaining momentum on the recruiting trail. Over the last 10 days, UF has landed four verbal commitments and hosted more than 30 prospects on campus, including 10 Rivals250/Top247 members. The Gators now have seven pledges in their 2016 class, the same number Jim McElwain had for 2015 when he took over the program in December. A month and a half removed from signing day, McElwain and his staff have already assembled a… Read More »

More visitors on tap for Gators

After receiving two commitments last Saturday during their junior day event, more recruits are flocking to Gainesville to watch the Florida Gators practice. Niceville wide receiver and Rivals100 member Eli Stove visited UF on Thursday with his father, Langston Stove, who spoke highly of the trip to Rivals.com. More receivers plan to visit Friday, most notably Isaiah Johnson of West Palm Beach Dwyer. He attended junior day last weekend and then decommitted from Miami, naming Florida his top school. Winter… Read More »

In-state recruiting areas for UF assistants

Florida coach Jim McElwain and his recruiting staff members have mapped out the in-state recruiting areas for the new assistants coaches. Next month marks the start of the evaluation period, where college coaches are permitted to visit high schools twice to evaluate recruits both athletically and academically. Recruiting the state of Florida is priority No. 1 for McElwain, and the assigned areas for his nine assistants on staff are listed below: Doug Nussmeier: Pasco, Hernando, Sumter and Pinellas counties Geoff Collins:… Read More »

Several recruits visiting UF this weekend

Recruits will flood Florida’s campus over the next month to catch spring football practices, and the Gators set things in motion this weekend. UF is scheduled to host more than a dozen recruits Saturday, including six Rivals250 members. Two of those are Rivals100 cornerbacks Chauncey Gardner and Trayvon Mullen. Gardner is a former Florida commitment still high on the Gators, while Mullen currently has LSU leading. Four-star running Elijah Holyfield, the son of former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield, is… Read More »

McElwain feels good about 2016 cycle

With Florida just days away from the start of spring football, recruiting is about to pick up for the Gators. UF currently has three verbal commitments, all of whom have pledged to the school in the past month. McElwain and his staff put together top-25 class in early February, with 15 of the 21 signees pledging in the final week and a half of the 2015 cycle. With a full year to recruit for 2016, McElwain feels much better about… Read More »

Florida offers 8th, 9th graders

The Sun doesn’t typically provide coverage on prospects outside of the current recruiting cycle, but the news out of Volusia County this week is worth noting. Florida offered Blake Hinson (6-5, 210) from Daytona Beach and Orange City’s Lorenzo Lingard (6-1, 185) on Monday. Me and boy Lorenzo @d1champ99 picked up the offer from Florida today. We ain't even finished yet! #WGA pic.twitter.com/KX3WafIhAq — Easy Money (@B_Hinson21) March 9, 2015 Hinson and Lingard certainly have the size and pass the… Read More »

McElwain talks Georgia recruiting, Jefferson saga

UF coach Jim McElwain has made the state of Florida a recruiting priority since he took over the football program, and he’s already making strides in South Florida. But McElwain and his assistants have also found some early success in Georgia. The Gators closed out their 2015 class with the addition of five Peach State prospects, the second most Florida has signed in the last decade. McElwain discussed those recruiting results in Georgia with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I think (it was… Read More »
